What West End is built from
Winston-Salem's first streetcar suburb, built from 1887: Queen Anne, Classical Revival and Colonial Revival houses on the hills northwest of downtown, high-ceilinged, many divided into apartments at some point and many with real basements under them.
Restorers, downtown professionals and long-term residents, in houses with rooms big enough to need a twelve-by-fifteen and stairs steep enough to make moving one a two-person job.
The West End problem
The basement is where rugs go to be ruined. These houses have below-grade rooms with masonry walls that wick ground moisture year-round, and the seasonal rug, the spare rug and the one from the room being repainted all end up down there. Rolled wool in a basement that sits at seventy-five percent relative humidity through a Carolina summer is not being stored, it is being incubated: mildew establishes in the foundation, the pile takes on a permanent cellar smell, and the dyes on the outside face of the roll can migrate into the layer beneath. A rug that has spent a summer down there needs full immersion washing to get the growth out of the base — airing it on the porch moves the smell around and puts none of it right.
