The Buena Vista problem
Light and stillness, working together. Big south and west windows put a great deal of visible light on a floor, and it is visible light — not just ultraviolet — that takes the red out of madder and flattens indigo. A rug positioned once and never turned develops a hard line where the sofa sat, with the exposed field two or three shades lighter, and that is not reversible. Underneath, the same stillness compacts the pile into the floor at every furniture foot and crushes the foundation flat along the traffic-free half of the rug. Neither shows up quickly and both are avoidable: turn the rug a hundred and eighty degrees twice a year, move furniture feet an inch or two when you do, and the fade stays even instead of becoming a shape you cannot stop seeing.
