Every rug is washed by hand, off site — not cleaned in place with a wand, and never run through a machine that treats silk the same way it treats a doormat.
Wall-to-wall carpet is stretched over a pad and sealed by its own backing. It drains downward, it is attached to the room, and it tolerates a fairly aggressive approach. An area rug is the opposite: open on both faces, loose on your floor, and in a lot of Triad houses held together by hand-tied knots on a cotton warp that is older than the house it is sitting in.
When a rug is cleaned in place with a hot-water wand, three things happen. Soil at the base of the pile gets pushed deeper instead of removed. Water goes into the foundation with nowhere to drain, which in a Carolina summer means a mildew problem within days. And whatever is underneath — in these neighbourhoods, usually an oak or heart-pine floor — takes the moisture with it and cups.
Off-site washing exists to avoid all of that. The rug leaves the house, gets its dry soil removed before any water is introduced, is washed and rinsed until the water runs clean, and is dried flat in controlled moving air. Then it comes back.
Six stages, in this order, every time. Skipping any of them is how rugs get damaged.
The rug is opened flat and examined front and back. Fibre and construction are identified, existing damage is logged, and every colour is swabbed to see whether the dye will hold. What comes out of that drives the wash plan, and you hear about anything found.
Before water, the dry load comes out. A rug in a Piedmont house holds clay grit, spring pollen and ordinary dust at the base of the pile. Compressed-air dusting and controlled beating shake it out of the foundation — the single most important step for how long the rug lasts.
Spots, pet contamination, mildew blooms, clay staining and traffic lanes are each treated with chemistry matched to the fibre, then given dwell time. Wool and silk get a neutral pH; synthetics will take something stronger.
The rug is submerged and washed by hand with soft brushes worked in the direction of the pile, so suspended soil floats free rather than being ground in. Delicate pieces and rugs with unstable dyes get a low-moisture wash instead.
Rinsing continues until the water runs clear, because detergent left in a rug is a magnet for new soil. Water is then pulled out mechanically and the rug dries flat under moving filtered air — never in direct sun, which fades dye and hardens wool.
Pile is groomed back into direction, fringe is cleaned and straightened, and the rug is checked against the intake notes. Anything still unresolved is flagged to you before it is wrapped for delivery.

From late March into May the Triad puts down a heavy pine and oak pollen load, and it ends up at the base of the pile where vacuuming does not reach. Pollen grains hold moisture against the fibre, so a spring load feeds the mildew that shows up in July. Dusting and a full flush take it out; surface cleaning moves it around.
Piedmont clay is iron-oxide mineral in plate-shaped particles. The iron stains wool orange and the plates cut it, so a clay traffic lane wears faster than footfall alone explains. Staining is a chemistry problem and is treated as one; the grit comes out in dusting and the rinse.
The smell that arrives after a humid stretch, or after a rug has sat rolled in a basement or garage, is microbial growth living in the foundation rather than on the surface. It is flushed out in the wash and followed with an antimicrobial treatment. Deodoriser sprayed on top does nothing that lasts past the next humid week.
Urine salts sit in the foundation and draw moisture out of the air, so they reactivate every humid stretch — which is why the smell keeps coming back and why surface treatment keeps failing. They also shift pH and burn dye out of wool from underneath. The contamination has to be flushed out, then the colour corrected where dye survived.
Most older Triad houses sit over a vented crawlspace. In summer the air under the floor is well below the conditioned room above it, and the underside of a rug becomes a condensing surface while the pile still feels dry. Washing resets it; a breathable pad and an occasional lift keep it from coming straight back.
