A rug rolled tight in plastic in an unconditioned Carolina garage or basement is being sealed in with whatever humidity was in it at the time, and it will come out smelling of the summer it sat through. Rugs store well loose, pile facing out, off the floor and out of plastic — and a rug that has already creased usually relaxes flat after a wash and a proper blocking.
