What Adams Farm is built from
Planned subdivisions in southwest Greensboro built from the late 1980s onward — two-storey houses with open family rooms, carpeted stairs, tile entries and attached garages that most of the household walks through instead of the front door.

The Adams Farm problem
Hand-tufted construction is the thing to watch. A tufted rug is not knotted; the yarn is punched through a backing cloth and held with a layer of latex adhesive, and latex has a service life. Heat and humidity shorten it. In a Carolina summer that adhesive slowly breaks down, which is what produces the unmistakable stale-glue smell people mistake for pet odour, along with shedding that never seems to stop and a rug that starts to ripple because the backing has delaminated in patches. It is cleanable, carefully and with tight moisture control, but the wash has to work around the adhesive layer rather than soaking it. Knowing which one you own before anybody wets it matters more here than anywhere else on our list.
